RESULTS OF GALVANIC CORROSION ROUND ROBIN TESTING,

Abstract:
THE RESULTS OF CU/AL 6061 AND 4130 STEEL/CU HAVE SHOWN THAT GALVANIC CURRENT MEASUREMENTS CAN BE CARRIED OUT WITH GOOD REPRODUCIBILITY IN ASTM CORROSIVE WATER. IT SHOULD BE NOTED THAT THIS RESULT WAS OBTAINED DESPITE THE FACT THAT THE CHOICE OF THE INSTRUMENTATION FOR GLAVANIC CURRENT MEASUREMENTS WAS LEFT TO THE INDIVIDUAL INVESTIGATOR. IT IS INTERESTING TO NOTE THAT MOST PARTICIPANTS USED A POTENTIOSTAT, WHICH IS PROBABLY DUE TO THE CONVENIENT ARRANGEMENT FOR MONITORING THE GALVANIC CURRENT AND POTENTIAL. THE AL 6061/4130 STEEL COUPLE IN ASTM CORROSIVE WATER REPRESENTS A SPECIAL CASE WHICH, WHILE VERY INTERESTING, CANNOT BE USED TO JUDGE THE PROCEDURE USED IN THIS TEST. IT ILLUSTRATES, HOWEVER, THE ADVANTAGE OF USING CONTINUOUS MONITORING BY AN ELECTROCHEMICAL TECHNIQUE WHICH DETECTS INSTANTANEOUSLY CHANGES IN POLARITY OF THE METALS IN THE COUPLE. BECAUSE OF THE GOOD REPRODUCTIBILITY OF GALVANIC CURRENT MEASUREMENTS WITH THE PRESENT PROCEDURE, AN ASTM RECOMMENDED PRACTICE FOR GALVANIC CURRENT MEASUREMENTS IS BEING PREPARED WHICH IS BASED ON THIS PROCEDURE.
